Transfer computer files - File Transfer Methods For Transferring Files From an Old Computer to a New Computer

File transfer methods are the means by which digital data can be transferred from one computer to another or between different operating systems that reside on the same computer. File transfer methods are typical to each operating system in particular and should be closely considered in relation with case specific requirements that result from data volume that needs to be transferred as well as the nature of the source and destination of the file transfer.

Recently, due to latest Microsoft Windows 7 operating system official market launch, many PC users are looking for efficient and effective methods of conducting various file transfer operations from one PC to another or from the older operating system towards Windows 7. As a result, Microsoft has included, as part of the upgrade utility from Windows 7, the Windows Easy Transfer wizard, a software component that enables PC users to efficiently migrate personal data, files and media from the operating system that is due to upgrade towards the new Windows 7.

Even if Windows Easy Transfer wizard has proven to be a suitable utility for various file transfer methods and scenarios, common PC users require a more easy to use application that can provide advanced file transfer methods in a flexible and user friendly graphical user interface. There are a few programs out there to accommodate this but the goal of this article is not push any particular vendor.

You can always transfer over files manually. This however can be very complicated if you want to transfer over personal settings and user account information. If you just want a few old files from your computer then it's a great and simple way to go. However it's not worth the time and effort if you need to transfer over a large amount of data.

Regardless of what software program you end using you then will need to decide on the exact transfer method to get the data from the old computer to the new computer. Just about all data transfer programs can do a delayed transfer, network transfer or direct computer to computer transfer.

Delayed Transfer Method: This is when you backup your files to an external device such as an external hard drive, DVD, or thumb drive. In this method you dump the data onto the device and then connect the device to the new system to import the old data in. This can get a little redundant and can be very time consuming. It is recommended that this option only be used when it's just personal files that you want and not a whole lot of custom settings.

Network Transfer: A network transfer is the option I use the most. Basically you will need to have both computer on the same network. Then use the data transfer program you have selected and begin transferring over the data. While this can take a while it's very simple for most people to use. You should disable any antivirus program while doing the transfer and disable the sleep mode option so none of the computers turn off while the transfer is going.

Computer to Computer Data Transfer Method: This is the option that most people find the easiest to use. Basically you are connecting a special network cable that will allow the two computers to communicate directly with each other. From there you are able to copy data over directly from one PC to the other. It is best to use a data transfer program to make the transition go smoothly.
